The Kensington Library is a branch of the Contra Costa County Library System and began as early as 1922 with 117 books. By 1959, as the library collection grew and the library moved to various locations within the community, the Kensington Improvement Club appointed a committee to form a Friend of the Kensington Library group to study ways of permanently improving the library facilities. In 1965, groundbreaking took place on the land purchased from the school district at a cost of $1.00 for the new building. Today, the Kensington Library, with its collection of over 33,000 books, 85 periodicals, and continually refreshed recorded books, movies, and music CDs has the highest use per capita in Contra Costa County library system.
